Texas HIE to connect with EMS providers

The Rio Grande Valley Health Information Exchange — which connects eight counties in Texas — has added the state's Trauma Regional Advisory Council to its services.

Under the agreement, the RGVHIE will provide technology and services to support data exchange for local 911 emergency medical services responders. The goal is to help EMS initiate more effective treatments en route to emergency departments.

Previously, EMS responders could not access, send and receive patient medical records, which hindered their ability to make informed decisions on time-sensitive treatments. The RGVHIE will allow EMS providers to access patient medical records and improve communication with hospital EDs.

"The RGVHIE firmly believes that access to information leads to better care, more efficient transitions of care, and improved outcomes and experiences. We will continue working with EMS providers to ensure that their health information exchange systems support the goal of delivering better emergency services for all patients in the community," reads an RGVHIE statement.
