Texas health system recruiting medical technologists for COVID-19 testing: 4 notes

Bryan, Texas-based St. Joseph Health plans to hire medical technologists and other staff members to support an influx of COVID-19 testing, according to a report from CBS affiliate KBTX-TV.

Four details:

1. The Texas Department of State Health Services gave the health system an $8.6 million grant to hire staff and buy equipment for more efficient and higher volume COVID-19 testing.

2. The health system aims to boost daily testing to 3,000 tests per day and improve result turnaround from three to five days to one to two days.

3. St. Joseph plans to hire 30 medical technologists and other staff with support from the grant.

4. The medical technologists will perform the COVID-19 testing and other lab tests while the nontechnical staff will sort and prepare samples and record the information in the EHR.
