Survey: 48% of companies report ransomware attack in past year

As the prevalence of ransomware grows, organizations are becoming increasingly skeptical of traditional cybersecurity measures, according to a SentinelOne report.

Here's what you need to know:

1. A total of 48 percent of respondents reported that their organization had suffered a ransomware attack in the past year.

2. A total of 65 percent of respondents said that traditional cybersecurity techniques do not protect their company from malware; 44 percent said they did not believe antivirus software was effective.

3. The most common organizational changes following a ransomware attack were increased spending on IT security (67 percent), shift in IT security strategy to focus on mitigation (52 percent) and loss of confidence in existing cybersecurity solutions (45 percent).

4. A total of 81 percent of respondents said the ransomware attacker gained access to the system through phishing emails or social media; 50 percent said access occurred through download on a compromised website.

5. When considering what information was affected by the ransomware attack, respondents identified employee information (42 percent), financial data (41 percent) and customer information (40 percent).
