Survey: 22% of Physicians Don't Plan to Meet MU2

A growing number of physicians are either refusing to participate in the meaningful use program or are dropping out after stage 1, according to a new survey from Medscape.

The survey of 18,575 physicians across 25 specialties revealed the majority, 78 percent, plan to attest to either stage 1 or stage 2 of meaningful use in 2014.

However, 16 percent reported they have no plans to participate in the meaningful use program at all, up from 14 percent in 2012. Additionally, 6 percent of physicians are dropping out of the program after previously attesting to stage 1.

Meaningful use stage 2 has proved challenging for physicians and hospitals alike. CMS continues to report low attestation numbers for the 2014 reporting year — as of July 1, 128 hospitals and 2,823 physicians have attested to meaningful use this year. Of those, just 10 hospitals and 972 physicians have attested to meaningful use stage 2.
