Stolen Laptop Compromises Patient Information at SIU HealthCare

A laptop containing 1,900 Southern Illinois University HealthCare patients' data was stolen from a physician's office at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Ill.*

Information on the laptop may have included patient names, dates of birth, medical record numbers and diagnosis and health information, according to a State Journal-Register report.

Officials from the Springfield, Ill.-based practice, part of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, do not believe the information has been used for identity theft but have notified all affected patients of the breach and have set up a hotline to respond to patient concerns, according to the report.

*An earlier version of this story incorrectly named Memorial Hospital in Carbondale (Ill.) as the site of the theft and subsequent breach.
