Sentara Healthcare expands virtual care services in 4 hospitals

Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Healthcare expanded telehealth services in four hospitals in 2016.

Here are six things to know about the expansions.

1. Virginia Beach, Va.-based Sentara Princess Anne Hospital installed a "virtual visitation" service in its neonatal intensive care unit to connect remote family members with patients.

2. Sentara expanded its eICU remote monitoring system for ICU beds at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk, Va. A total of 119 ICU beds in several Sentara hospitals have access to the remote monitoring system.

3. Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City, N.C., gained telestroke services in 2016, bringing the total Sentara hospital-based and freestanding emergency departments with the technology to 15. Telestroke services allow remote assessment of patients through cameras and voice communication.    

4. Sentara Williamsburg (Va.) Regional Medical Center expanded inpatient teleneurology services last year. 

5. Sentara expanded its telepsych services to six EDs to remotely assess psychiatric patients. More than half of psychiatric evaluations in Sentara EDs are performed by virtual technologies.

6. Sentara's Norfolk and Williamsburg locations expanded telemagistrate services, allowing magistrates to remotely connect with psychiatric evaluators to determine if emergency or temporary detention orders should be issued for patients.
