Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health launched a virtual care program across 27 Good Samaritan skilled nursing and assisted living facilities in South Dakota, part of the health system’s $350 million virtual care initiative.
The My Care Line program connects Good Samaritan caregivers with Sanford registered nurses and advanced practice providers from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and around the clock on weekends, according to an Oct. 8 news release from Sanford. Care is delivered via phone or video in the resident’s room and may include support for falls, medication administration and changes in condition.
The program aims to reduce after-hours disruptions and strengthen staffing support in rural facilities. Half of the communities involved have fewer than 1,000 residents, and four lack a hospital altogether, requiring residents to travel up to 40 miles for care, the release said.
Sanford plans to expand the program to all Good Samaritan locations.
