Rochester Regional launches OpenNotes to improve patient engagement

Rochester (N.Y.) Regional Health has rolled out OpenNotes, a national initiative that gives patients access to medical notes written by physicians, nurses and clinicians during episodes of care.

Patients who have missed or forgotten information provided during a healthcare visit will now be able to revisit physician notes through the health system’s patient portal.

“The transparency offered by OpenNotes breaks down artificial barriers that keep patients from truly understanding and managing their own care,” said Bridgette Wiefling, chief quality innovation officer with Rochester Regional Health.

The pilot launched at two Rochester Regional Health primary care practices — Northridge Medical Group in Rochester and Internal Medicine Associates in Webster. The health system hopes to expand to additional primary care offices in the coming months.
