Most hospital leaders — 74 percent — said their organization currently uses a clinical decision support tool, according to a recent Reaction Data survey.
For the survey, the research firm spoke with 180 hospital leaders — including CMOs (31 percent), chief medical information officers (13 percent) or quality directors (13 percent) — about their CDS adoption.
Here are five report insights:
1. On the clinical side, organizations are primarily using CDS for:
- Medication orders (30 percent)
- Lab orders (24 percent)
- Medical imaging orders (20 percent)
- American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation's Choosing Wisely alerts (13 percent)
2. On the imaging side, organizations are primarily using CDS to:
- Meet the CMS mandate (47 percent)
- Achieve strategic goals (2 percent)
- Both (51 percent)
3. Cerner holds the highest market presence (25 percent) for clinical CDS solutions, followed by EPSi from Allscripts (14 percent) and Epic (11 percent).
4. Slightly more than half of respondents (55 percent) said their organization uses multiple CDS solutions.
5. Of respondents from organizations using multiple solutions, only 26 percent said they plan to standardize on to one platform.
