Potential data breach at Jersey City Medical Center due to lost computer disk

Jersey City (N.J.) Medical Center is notifying patients of a potential data breach after a computer disk was lost in transit, according to a report in The Star-Ledger.

The hospital allegedly sent the disk in a package to a third-party company that reviews payments to the hospital. The package never arrived at its destination, according to the report.

The unencrypted disk contained Social Security numbers, birth dates and limited medical information on Medicaid patients from 2011, but no patient addresses or details about treatments or diagnoses were on the disk, according to the report.

United Parcel Service was handling the package and told the hospital it "has no reason to believe" the patient information is being misused, according to the report.
