As an ONC-ATCB, InfoGard Laboratories, based in San Luis Obispo, Calif., is authorized to test and certify electronic health record systems for compliance with standards and certification criteria set by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services earlier this year. Certification by ONC-ATCBs ensures EHR products will support healthcare providers’ goal of achieving meaningful use.
EHR certification is part of a government initiative under the HITECH Act, which implemented incentive payment programs to help healthcare providers adopt EHRs. To qualify for incentive payments, healthcare providers must not only adopt but also demonstrate meaningful use of EHR systems. EHR vendors can apply for certification of their products.
