One of the main goals of Million Hearts is to empower Americans to make healthy choices, such as preventing tobacco use and reducing sodium and trans fat consumption. The second major goal is to improve care for patients by focusing on “ABCS”: Aspirin for people at risk, Blood pressure control, Cholesterol management and Smoking cessation.
Specifically, HHS and its partners hope to achieve the following improvements in cardiovascular treatment and prevention by 2017:
– Increase aspirin use for people at high risk from 47 percent to 65 percent.
– Increase blood pressure control from 46 percent to 65 percent.
– Increase effective treatment of high cholesterol (LDL-C) from 33 percent to 65 percent.
– Reduce smoking prevalence from 19 percent to 17 percent.
– Reduce the average sodium intake by 20 percent.
– Reduce the average artificial trans fat consumption by 50 percent.
