The project is a $3.72 million effort funded by Medicaid dollars and the ONC and is headed by the New Jersey Innovation Institute. The database, called the Master Person Index, aims to distinguish every person to ensure patients with similar names or demographic data are not confused by providers. The database will also connect physicians, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to comprehensive patient information.
The Master Person Index will go live online later this month as a pilot, at first connecting data from two Newark hospital EHRs — the University Hospital and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center — and later adding other physician groups, clinics and drug stores. The index will also link to public health databases.
