More than 200 participants forming 31 teams submitted ideas for the hackathon, InnovateNYP Open Challenge.
First place was awarded to a project called MedChat, a mobile application that facilitates care team communication and collaboration in a chat room open only to members of a patient’s care team. The winning team received $15,000.
An app called Mocabell, short for Your Mobile Call Bell, won second place and $7,500. This app allows patients to communicate directly with the nursing staff by sending self-directed messages to nurses’ desktop or mobile devices.
In third place came Curbsided, built out of NYP’s existing communication app NYPConnect. Curbsided allows physicians and providers to consult specialists in the hospital. The third place team won $2,500.
Now, the hospital will work with the winners to further develop their ideas and make them feasible for the hospital environment.
“The other judges and I were incredibly impressed by the range of smart and creative solutions we reviewed,” said Aurelia Boyer, senior vice president and CIO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. “We strongly believe that bringing outside perspectives together through this type of challenge helps drive innovation in healthcare IT. This contest has again offered us some fantastic ideas that can be translated into real-life solutions.”
