Medical Groups Struggle to Meet HIPAA Version 5010 Compliance Date

Recent findings from a Medical Group Management Association survey suggest many medical groups are facing significant challenges in meeting the new HIPAA Version 5010 electronic standards, which they must successfully implement by Jan. 1, 2012, according to an MGMA news release.

Only 22.3 percent of respondents believed their current software would permit them to use Version 5010, while 48.6 percent stated their software would require an upgrade and 5.8 percent indicated their software would need replacement. Approximately one-quarter of respondents (22.6 percent) reported not knowing what needed to be done with their software.

Survey results also showed a majority of respondents (59.8 percent) have not started their implementation of Version 5010, and more than half of respondents (56.3 percent) had not yet scheduled internal testing.
