Mailing Error Leads to Potential Data Breach for Highmark

The medical information of 3,675 Highmark members may be compromised due to health risk assessment results being mailed to the wrong patients, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.

Highmark began investigating the incident after members reported receiving other people's health risk assessment results. The health insurer has notified the members who may be affected, however, Highmark confirmed 63 members received forms not belonging to them, and 233 members did not receive any forms at all, according to the report.

Potentially compromised data includes names, addresses, birth dates, some medical information and member identification numbers, but chief privacy officer of Highmark Health, the insurer's parent company, said it is unlikely anyone has done anything with the data, according to the report.

Highmark fired the mailroom employee responsible for the error, according to the report.
