By connecting the Nebraska Health Information Initiative, Kansas Health Information Network and Missouri Health Connection, patients can receive care in Kansas and then receive additional care in surrounding states or vice versa.
The states connected their HIEs through the Direct project, which was launched in March 2012 as part of the Nationwide Health Information Network to enable providers to send and receive authenticated, encrypted healthcare information.
