Interoperability at the Forefront of ONC's 2011 Agenda

Interoperability will be at "the top of the agenda" as the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT works toward Stage 2 meaningful use, according to a Government Health IT news report.

The ONC is organizing their plan of action which would work toward making robust and complex exchange of information possible in Stage 2 meaningful use. The work plan includes planning around standards and certification criteria, privacy and security measures and governance over the information exchanges, according to the report.

In addition to the focus on those key areas, the ONC has placed interoperability as a high priority. "In part, we feel a sense of urgency because we fear if we don't lay the groundwork for that soon that we may not be able to do it later on," said David Blumenthal, MD, national health IT coordinator.

The ONC also will be working toward increasing e-prescribing and exchange of patient care summaries among physicians, as well as clinical decision support, in order to achieve interoperability.
