Intel faces potential third round of layoffs

Due to declining performance in its wearables business, Intel is allegedly preparing for its third set of layoffs in the past year and a half, according to The Oregonian.

In April, Intel cut 12,000 positions. The company eliminated more than 1,100 jobs in 2015.

This round of layoffs is a little less clear. TechCrunch reported the cuts will mainly affect employees in Intel’s wearables business.

But in a statement to TechCrunch, Intel said its wearables sector is growing despite the reported layoffs. “Intel is in no way stepping back from the wearables business,” the statement read. “In fact, we have several products in the works that we are very excited about, as well as prior launches that highlight our wearable technology such as the TAG Heuer Connected watch and recent Oakley Radar Pace smart eyewear.”

The Oregonian did not cite how many positions the layoffs could affect.
