Virginia Mason Hospital & Medical Center (Seattle). Since beginning its journey toward sustainability in the 1980s, Virginia Mason’s conservation projects have grown into EnviroMason, the health system’s environmental stewardship initiative. Virginia Mason uses a “Lean and Green” approach to minimize the health system’s carbon footprint, conserve energy and minimize waste in daily operations. For example, the health system’s sterile processing department collaborated with physicians to reduce the number of instruments included in a surgery case kit. The health system also donates unused and unopened surgery tools to keep items out of landfills and support global health efforts. Practice Greenhealth awarded Virginia Mason the Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award for the third consecutive year in 2017.
