Vanderbilt researchers create device for ICU patients that filters out medical alarms

Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center developed a device for intensive care patients that eliminates the sound of medical alarms while allowing the patient to hear human voices and other environmental sound.

The researchers detailed the creation of the device and their findings at the International Community for Auditory Display at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, from June 20 to June 23.

The research team found the noise clinical alarms make can hinder patient recovery by disturbing sleep and exacerbating psychological problems.

The in-ear device, which the patient wears, digitally subtracts sound waves while preserving speech comprehension. The team tested the device in an ICU and found it helped filter out the sound of medical alarms. The physicians can still hear the alarms.
