Twenty-five patients have received surgeries for laparoscopic gallbladder and appendix removal, and patients have experienced quicker recovery time, less pain and that a scar that is hard to view, the report said. Costs of the laparoscopic surgery and the Covidien-branded device cost more than a traditional laparoscopic surgery, but the report said Memorial Hospitals physicians thought those benefits outweighed the costs.
Instead of multiple incisions being made, only one 1.5-inch incision is made inside the patient’s belly button, according to the report. A port is then inserted through the incision, allowing surgeons to use their tools and camera without creating anymore incisions in the patients.
