Andre Gasic, MD, and Perry Lewis, MD, performed the procedure, using the ALO 360 Ablation Therapy System. According to the report, the physicians used the device to remove diseased esophageal lining that may lead to esophageal cancer.
The new procedure is done on an outpatient patient basis and can be completed in 30-60 minutes, according to the report. The physician uses an endoscope to insert a catheter that generates a short burst of high energy, which burns away a microscopic layer of the esophagus around its entire circumference. Healthy tissue replaces the removed tissue in three to four weeks for most patients.
