Overlook Medical Center (Summit, N.J.). Overlook Medical Center has engaged in green initiatives across the board to reduce its carbon footprint and increase sustainability. The hospital has a tri-generation power plant that produces four megawatts of electricity through harnessing the heat produced by generators and substituting steam formerly created by boilers. The process reduces the cost of replaced energy by more than 60 percent. In 2013, the hospital established an on-campus beehive and now has 10 beehives total. The hospital also supports a community garden and owns chickens as part of their efforts to provide locally sourced food. In 2016, the hospital saved an estimated 5,752 trees, 22,334 gallons of oil and 528,413 gallons of water through green initiatives such as staff education on waste management, installing a fluid management system and increased recycling efforts. Overlook Medical Center earned two awards in 2017 from Practice Greenhealth: the Greenhealth Emerald Award for environmental achievements in healthcare, and Greening the OR for success in reducing the environmental impact of its surgical suites.
