Researchers at Evanston, Ill.-based Northwestern University have developed a soft, flexible probe that can continuously monitor fetal vital signs in real time during surgery.
The device — described by the school as the first of its kind — fits through a standard fetoscopic surgery port and tracks heart rate, blood oxygen levels and temperature, according to a Jan. 26 news release. Its design includes miniature sensors and a balloon-like cushion to maintain gentle contact with the fetus throughout the procedure.
In a large animal model, the filament-thin probe accurately measured vital signs even as the uterus and fetus moved, according to a study published in Nature Biomedical Engineering. Researchers said the technology may allow surgeons to detect fetal distress earlier and intervene sooner to prevent complications.
