Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic has launched an AI-enabled clinical decision support tool that integrates into electronic health records to help clinicians access medical information and guidance when making patient care decisions.
The solution, developed by Mayo Clinic Platform, is available to Mayo Clinic clinicians and healthcare professionals at organizations participating in the platform’s healthcare provider programs.
The tool, according to a Nov. 3 news release shared with Becker’s, is designed to bring Mayo Clinic’s medical knowledge and evidence-informed guidance directly into clinical workflows, reducing the need for physicians and other healthcare professionals to search multiple resources for information.
“Clinicians have access to a vast amount of medical knowledge, but finding relevant information for individualized patient care takes valuable time,” Maneesh Goyal, chief operating officer of Mayo Clinic Platform, said in the news release. “With this new solution, we are bringing trusted Mayo Clinic knowledge directly into the clinical workflow so clinicians can spend less time searching for information across multiple resources and more time focused on patient care.”
Beginning in November, participating clinicians will have access to two key capabilities:
- Specialty-specific AI chat: Powered by a large language model, the tool covers more than 35 medical specialties and provides information to help clinicians evaluate complex cases. It cites peer-reviewed medical literature and is updated daily to incorporate emerging evidence. The chat can be integrated into EHR workflows.
- Clinical calculators: The solution includes 22 clinical calculators accessible through chat or voice dictation. They provide evidence-based decision support using clinical questions and patient care context, including calculators developed by Mayo Clinic.
Mayo said the platform will evolve as additional tools become available.
“The CDS solution is designed to assist healthcare professionals as they make patient care decisions; it does not replace clinical judgment,” Gelareh Zadeh, MD, PhD, chair of neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and chief medical officer of Mayo Clinic Platform, said in the news release.
Mayo said physicians provided feedback during development and that its approach to responsible AI includes evaluations of safety, effectiveness, privacy, security and clinical value, along with human oversight and ongoing monitoring.
