He was 102. He died on July 7 in Chicago.
Dr. Kirshner, the Louis Block Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago, was considered a pioneer in gastroenterology and broke ground in the understanding and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, according to the report.
He helped found the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation twice gave Dr. Kirshner their lifetime achievement award.
