Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health’s $1.5 billion Pearl innovation district generated an estimated $224 million in economic impact during its first year of operation.
Developed through a public-private partnership between Atrium Health and Wexford Science & Technology, the innovation district opened June 5, 2025, to bring together education, research, clinical innovation and industry on a single campus.
Here is a look at The Pearl, its impact and where it’s headed:
- The innovation district generated $9.8 million in tax revenue for Mecklenburg County, the city of Charlotte and the state of North Carolina, according to a July 9, 2026, news release shared with Becker’s.
- The Pearl created 2,270 jobs, 560 of them onsite positions spanning healthcare, research and development, education, and hospitality. That total reflects both direct hiring and broader economic effects.
- The district’s first phase spans 700,000 square feet and reached 85% occupancy within six months of opening. It now serves as a hub for research, education, clinical innovation and industry collaboration.
- At full buildout, the 38-acre campus will add residential units, a hotel, office and innovation space, retail and public gathering areas. Once complete, the development is projected to generate $1.2 billion in annual economic impact and $24 million in annual local and state tax revenue.
- Over the past year, The Pearl has hosted 330 events, including educational programs, training sessions and community gatherings, drawing more than 18,000 visitors.
- The campus is a home to several education and research organizations, including Wake Forest University School of Medicine, which enrolled its inaugural class of 49 medical students; Carolinas College of Health Sciences; Siemens Healthineers; and IRCAD North America, a surgical training institute that has hosted more than 130 training sessions and events involving more than 5,000 participants from at least 17 countries.
