The health system is using a new AI-based tool that can anticipate the likelihood of lung cancer based on imaging nodule characteristics.

The tool then uses these insights to classify patients into three categories: high-risk, intermediate-risk, or low-risk, according to a March 29 release from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist.

The tool, according to the health system, is aiding its pulmonologists and radiologists to better detect and track cancerous lung nodules, especially those that could get missed or are difficult to access using traditional bronchoscopy.

“This technology is already changing lives,” said Christina Bellinger, MD, director of Wake Forest Baptist’s interventional pulmonary program. “We are getting better samples, diagnosing cancer earlier and improving patient outcomes.”
