AI is more objective at determining coronary calcium scores, study says

A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology shows that artificial intelligence can more quickly and more objectively determine coronary artery calcium scores in computed tomographic and positron emission tomographic images than physicians.

Calcium scores measure atherosclerosis, a buildup of fats in artery walls that can lead to serious heart problems. The AI model was trained on 9,543 CT scans annotated by experts and tested on 4,331 patients, and researchers found that the AI tool led to less radiation, less imaging and lower costs, according to the Sept. 14 study.

The study was funded in part through a research grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of Health.
