3 ways health systems are using AI to improve patient care

From backing artificial intelligence-based startups that can detect emotions to developing an artificial intelligence-based tool that can predict “ICU delirium,” here are three ways hospitals and health systems are using artificial intelligence to improve patient care:

  1. Northwell Holdings, the venture capital arm of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, is again backing Hume AI, a startup aiming to detect emotions using artificial intelligence, in a $12.7 million funding round for the company.
  2. Researchers at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University have created an artificial intelligence tool to predict the risk of a patient developing “ICU delirium,” a condition in which patients admitted to the intensive care unit develop bouts of confusion, inattention, paranoia and, in some cases, hallucinations.
     
  3. Researchers at New York City-based NYU Langone and the University of Toronto are collaborating on an artificial intelligence tool that can model a type of gene editing DNA interactions called “zinc finger” editing.
