HHS' Innovation Awards Give Millions to Tech-Driven Projects

HHS has announced 12 recipients of a combined $110 million in grant funding under its Health Innovation Awards program, many of which feature technology-driven projects.

The projects all aim to improve healthcare delivery while reducing costs. For example, Avera Health in Sioux Falls, S.D., is receiving $8.8 million to launch a Virtual Care Center to provide more constant care access for geriatric patients, and the Association of American Medical Colleges is receiving $7.1 million to test an e-consult and e-referral program in five academic medical centers to help reduce gaps in care.

"These efforts will strengthen federal, state and local partnerships, encourage broad stakeholder engagement and capitalize on federal resources to ensure greater transformation of delivery of health care services," said CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner in the news release.
