HealthTap launches new search tool

Palo Alto, Calif.-based HealthTap, a virtual care company, unveiled its Smart Health Search, which allows users to search for health information specifically tailored to their needs.

Through new algorithms in Smart Health Search, patients can utilize HealthTap's library to find content specifically geared toward their gender, age, comorbidities, pregnancy status and other information stored on their HealthTap record. The information is only accessible to authorized physicians with the user's permission.

"On HealthTap, a 24-year-old woman will see different search results from the ones a 70-year-old man receives to a question like 'Should I take iron supplements?' or when searching symptoms like 'swollen ankles and weight gain' ... women may benefit from iron supplements when menstruating, and swollen ankles and weight gain may be symptoms of pregnancy," said HealthTap CMO Geoffrey Rutledge, MD, PhD.

Along with improvements to the Smart Health Search program, HealthTap officials revealed news that the company has successfully answered five billion queries for health information.
