Sanford Health, based in Sioux Falls, S.D., is among the first health systems to roll out a new feature in its MyChart patient portal that allows individuals to register directly with the National Donate Life Registry.
The functionality — enabled through a partnership between Epic and Donate Life America — integrates donor registration into MyChart. The new feature allows patients to opt in to organ, eye or tissue donation for transplant, research or education purposes.
Registrations are confidential and visible only to donation professionals, not care teams, according to a May 13 news release Sanford shared with Becker’s. Basic patient information already stored in MyChart prepopulates the form, streamlining the process.
Once registered, a patient’s donor status travels with them — even if they relocate — just like their Epic medical records.
The MyChart update is expected to go live in the coming weeks.
Sanford said the integration is aimed at lowering barriers to organ donation.
