Coming from a family of “healthcare people” has given Epic founder and CEO Judy Faulkner a leg up in the industry, she said.
Ms. Faulkner has eight working-age physicians in her family, and her father was a pharmacist while her sister became a family physician after starting off as a nurse. Ms. Faulkner began her own career employed by University of Wisconsin-Madison physicians, developing software to track patient data over time.
“My favorite T-shirt says, ‘Health IT is more complex than rocket science,'” Ms. Faulkner wrote in a Dec. 1 blog post. “Three people who work at Epic used to work in rocket science, and all three say that is true.
“When you grow up with healthcare, you mostly understand it. If you have to learn healthcare as an adult, it certainly is doable, but it takes time and thought.”
