The United States ranks high in EHR adoption but low in interoperability, according to a global interoperability study by market research firm Black Book Research.
Here are EHR interoperability rates by country, according to the study based on verified usage data, government platform metrics, and more than 2 million stakeholder surveys:
Top-ranked countries
Estonia: 99.1%
Finland: 98.9%
Denmark: 98.2%
Sweden: 95.4%
New Zealand: 90.3%
Singapore: 90.1%
Netherlands: 88.9%
Norway: 87.3%
Australia: 85.7%
Lower-ranked countries
United Kingdom: 80.5%
Canada: 74.6%
Germany: 70.2%
United States: 59.8%
“The U.S. continues to face significant structural challenges,” Black Book Research wrote in an April 24 news release. “Fragmented EHR systems, voluntary participation in health information exchanges, and inconsistent compliance with federal interoperability rules hinder widespread data sharing. Surveyed providers expressed concerns over administrative burden, limited patient record portability, and insufficient cross-platform compatibility — even within the same state or hospital network.”
