Epic has rolled out AI Charting, a built-in tool that listens during patient visits and drafts clinicians’ notes and suggested orders in real time.
The feature is part of Epic’s expanding set of AI capabilities built directly into its software, according to a Feb. 4 press release. Epic said AI Charting is designed to reduce documentation burden during visits while helping clinicians stay focused on patients.
AI Charting is part of Art, Epic’s AI suite for clinicians. In addition to drafting visit notes and suggesting orders based on clinician-patient conversations, Epic said the initial release allows clinicians to personalize the structure of current and future notes using voice commands.
“Our developers worked closely onsite with physicians across many specialties as we created AI Charting,” Corey Miller, vice president of research and development at Epic, said in the release. “Feedback has been very positive, and we’re iterating quickly based on what clinicians tell us works best.”
Epic also pointed to growing adoption of Art, citing its Insights feature, which summarizes information from across the patient chart to help clinicians prepare for visits. Epic said Insights is now used more than 16 million times each month, nearly a threefold increase from November 2025.
Beyond clinical documentation, Epic highlighted Penny, its AI tool for operational workflows and revenue cycle. More than 200 organizations use Penny to automate professional billing coding, Epic said, and many are seeing more than a 20% reduction in coding-related denials. Epic said organizations using Penny for medical necessity denial appeals are creating letters 23% faster.
On the patient side, Epic said its AI assistant Emmie provides conversational support within MyChart and via text message, helping patients schedule appointments, understand bills, make payments and set up payment plans. Epic also announced that MyChart Central — which provides patients with a single Epic ID across providers — is now live in all 50 states.
