Athenahealth, Anthropic connect patient records to Claude

Athenahealth on Nov. 2 launched athenaPatient MCP, a new server that gives patients a way to connect their official health data directly to Anthropic’s Claude.

The tool runs on the Model Context Protocol, which provides secure connection points that let generative AI models pull structured clinical data, such as EHRs, directly from authorized systems, according to a Nov. 2 Athenahealth news release. Claude retrieves a patient’s record at the patient’s request, after the patient signs in with Athenahealth credentials.

Claude Pro and Max users in the U.S. can add the connector through their Claude settings and ask questions about their health in natural language, according to the release. Claude can draw on lab results, vitals, medications, conditions, immunizations, visit history, diagnostic reports, allergies, procedures and care plans to tailor its answers.

Patients choose which information to share and can revoke access at any time.

The launch responds to rising consumer use of AI for health questions. Thirty-four percent of U.S. adults have used AI assistants for health-related purposes, according to an August 2026 Pew Research Center survey.

Paul Brient, chief product and operations officer at Athenahealth, called the launch “an important milestone in responsibly integrating AI into the patient experience.”

Syed Mohiuddin, head of healthcare at Anthropic, said patients often have questions about their records between visits.

“Athenahealth is giving patients a way to bring their own records into Claude when they choose to, so they can explore those questions and feel more confident and prepared in conversations with their care team,” Mr. Mohiuddin said.

Athenahealth called the Claude connection a next step toward letting patients use AI tools to understand their records and prepare for care decisions.
