EHR Association Wants Stage 2 Upgrade Deadline Extended

The EHR Association, representing software developers and electronic health record vendors, has submitted comments on the Stage 2 meaningful use proposed rule.

The association's comments are supportive of CMS' and ONC's efforts, especially of the one-year delay for the start of Stage 2. "[The EHR Association] strongly supports and appreciates CMS' proposed one-year extension of Stage 1 of meaningful use. We also recommend that CMS and ONC consider the additional ideas shared previously by the EHR Association and again in our comments this week that would build upon the one-year extension and assist in holistically resolving the challenge of appropriately timing Stage 2 for all stakeholders," wrote Carl Dvorak, vice president of Epic and chair of the EHR Association.

The additional ideas Mr. Dvorak mentions including giving providers 18 months instead of 12 to 15 months to upgrade EHR systems. The association also expressed concern over potential challenges from the number of proposed clinical quality measures and placing responsibility for patient actions on providers.
