Outpatient Spine: Is it Gaining More Traction?

At the 19th Annual Ambulatory Surgery Centers Conference in Chicago Oct. 25, Naya Kehayes, managing principal and CEO of Eveia Health Consulting & Management discussed why outpatient spine procedures are becoming heavily emphasized in ASCs and other hospital-owned outpatient centers.

Spine procedures have become one of the most profitable service lines in the outpatient setting, and the high acuity cases lead to higher reimbursements.

Ms. Kehayes said private payors are more likely to approve payments for spine procedures than in the past, but that doesn’t mean all services will be fully covered. “The payors are coming around significantly,” she said, adding that review with a payor’s medical director is sometimes required.
