Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has gone live with Epic’s AI Text Assistant, a generative AI tool designed to make clinical notes easier for patients to understand, according to the health system’s associate chief health informatics officer for platform innovation.

Stephon Proctor, PhD, associate chief health informatics officer for platform innovation at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia made the announcement via a Nov. 18 LinkedIn post. The tool, according to Dr. Proctor, helps simplify medical terminology, reduce stigmatizing language and make documentation more actionable for patients and families.

CHOP has offered patients access to their clinical notes since the 2021 Cures Act, but studies show many still struggle to understand them, he said. The AI Text Assistant, developed specifically for healthcare documentation, aims to close that gap with minimal added work for clinicians, according to the post.

Dr. Proctor credited CHOP’s generative AI implementation team, AI governance committee and an Epic developer for supporting the rollout.
