Data Breach at DaVita HealthCare Partners Compromises PHI of 11,500

DaVita, a division of DaVita HealthCare Partners in Denver, has announced a data breach following the theft of a laptop from an employee's car.

The laptop contained the information of 11,500 patients, including names, diagnoses, insurance information and treatment information. The Social Security numbers of 375 of these patients were also on the laptop.

Though the laptop was password-protected and encrypted, an investigation revealed the encryption had been unintentionally deactivated. Despite this, DaVita does not believe the patient information has been inappropriately accessed.
