Dartmouth-Hitchcock Collaborates With Mayo Clinic for Telestroke Program

The Dartmouth-Hitchcock healthcare system in Lebanon, N.H., has partnered with Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic to provide participating hospitals with around-the-clock access to stroke specialists through a new telestroke program.

The program uses videoconferencing technology to allow specialists from Dartmouth-Hitchcock and Mayo Clinic to communicate with emergency department physicians, examine the patient, interpret brain images, confirm a stroke diagnosis and provide treatment recommendations.

"Telehealth is critical to creating a sustainable health system that focuses on population health, value and payment models that reward high-quality care," said James N. Weinstein, DO, president and CEO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock in the news release. "New technologies are making it possible for us to deliver care in ways never before imagined — giving patients the care they need close to home."

The first hospital to join the program is Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, N.H. "We chose to work with Dartmouth-Hitchcock because we are committed to providing a higher standard of care for our patients," said Joseph Pepe, MD, president and CEO of Catholic Medical Center, in the news release. "We are very proud of the stroke program we have at CMC, and now look forward to bringing the expertise of Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Center for Telehealth to our patients and the community we serve."
