President Donald Trump is calling for “unprecedented coordination across government and the private sector” to increase the nation’s cybersecurity.
“Our adversaries and cyber criminals … disrupt critical services like healthcare, banking, food supply, and water treatment,” Mr. Trump wrote in the March 6 cyber strategy plan. “We will identify, prioritize, and harden America’s critical infrastructure,” including hospitals.
Here are five things to know from the report:
1. The plan places a strong focus on using U.S. cyber capabilities offensively to deter or punish adversaries, not just defend networks. Mr. Trump emphasizes that the U.S. will use “all instruments of national power” in cyberspace and signals a willingness to disrupt hostile actors’ networks directly
2. The approach highlights upgrading federal networks and IT systems and improving the protection of critical infrastructure. It calls for modernization efforts and stronger protections across government systems and key sectors.
3. The plan stresses maintaining U.S. leadership in critical and emerging technologies, including AI and next-generation computing. It aims to secure the “technology stack” behind these innovations and prevent adversaries from exploiting them.
4. The framework seeks to simplify or streamline cyber regulations for industry. The administration argues that excessive compliance requirements slow innovation and response to threats.
5. The cybersecurity blueprint aims to coordinate action across agencies and diplomacy to combat cybercrime and ransomware groups. The U.S. plans to use sanctions, law enforcement, and international pressure against countries that harbor cybercriminal networks.
