Quest Diagnostics has restored its Quanum Lab Services Manager system following a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access, but the company is still investigating the full scope of the patient data accessed.

In an Oct. 26 update, the Secaucus, N.J.-based laboratory testing company said it had remediated the security incident and securely restored the affected system, which healthcare providers use to order laboratory tests and retrieve results.

Other systems temporarily paused as a precaution, including Essential Insights and LabHQ, have also been restored and are operating securely, according to Quest. The company said no data was accessed in those systems.

Quest learned of the incident Oct. 21 and said in an Oct. 22 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it believed an unauthorized party had accessed certain patient records.

The company activated its cybersecurity incident response procedures, notified federal law enforcement and engaged outside cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident.

Although the affected systems have resumed operations, Quest said its investigation into the full scope of the unauthorized access, including potential exposure of patient information, remains ongoing.

The company said it will notify patients and healthcare providers determined to have been affected and report the incident to relevant regulatory authorities as its investigation progresses.

Quest has not disclosed how many patients may have been affected or the specific data involved, though it said personal information and patient records were affected.

The company said its core business operations were not disrupted. Providers using direct laboratory information system interfaces or electronic medical records to order Quest tests were also unaffected.
