A researcher from Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic sent research data containing protected health information to his personal email account, a spokesperson for the health system told Becker’s.

The incident was discovered Feb. 28. The compromised data did not include patient names, addresses or other directly identifying information, according to Mayo Clinic.

“Mayo Clinic is deeply committed to protecting patient privacy and maintaining the highest standards of data security,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement to Becker’s.

The health system said it has taken appropriate disciplinary action against the researcher and has notified affected patients.
