The healthcare and public health sector was the leading target of cyber threats in 2025, the FBI reported.
Here are five things to know from the agency’s annual Internet Crime Report, released April 6:
1. Healthcare and public health experienced 642 cybercrime events last year, the most of any critical infrastructure industry. Financial services came in second with 447. Healthcare also topped the list in 2024.
2. The sector was hit with 460 ransomware attacks (more than any other industry) and 182 data breaches (third-most).
3. The FBI recovered assets in 65% of the healthcare cybercrimes.
4. The top ransomware variants affecting healthcare, government faciltiies and critical manufacturers were, in order, Akira, Qlin, INC./Lynx/Sinobi, BianLian, Play, Ransomhub, Lockbit, Dragonforce, SAFEPAY, and Medusa.
5. The FBI disrupted the BlackSuit (Royal) ransomware gang, which preyed upon hospitals, in August.
