Change Healthcare data breach toll reaches 192.7 million

Change Healthcare has increased the number of people estimated to be affected by a 2024 cyberattack to nearly 193 million.

The UnitedHealth Group claims processing subsidiary revealed the number, a few million more than its last estimate, in a letter to the New Hampshire Office of the Attorney General. The company was writing to say it could not find addresses for all patients impacted in the state.

“The final total number of individuals impacted by the Change Healthcare cyberattack is approximately 192.7 million,” a company spokesperson told Becker’s. “Individual state numbers (reported on behalf of delegated customers) will vary in each state. The February 2024 ransomware attack left many healthcare providers unable to process claims and prescriptions and breached the data of millions of Americans. Change Healthcare handles an estimated 1 in 3 healthcare transactions.

The company has been mailing letters to alert affected patients. Providers have delegated the notification process to Change Healthcare for all but 1.3 million individuals, according to the letter.
