Cook County hospital system reports data breach

The Cook County Health & Hospitals System has posted a notice regarding a potential data breach.

An individual working on behalf of CCHHS sent an email to an authorized individual at a non-Cook County healthcare organization that contained unencrypted protected health information, according to a notice on CCHHS’ website.

The recipient of the email deleted the message without opening it, according to the hospital system.

The compromised information included patient names, birth dates, race, ethnicity, gender, zip code, medical record number, service date, place of service and lab test results. No addresses or Social Security numbers were included.

The notice did not indicate how many patients were affected in this breach.
