CommonWell Health Alliance Brings Health IT One Step Closer to Interoperability

In “Health Data Interoperability: Online Shopping Provides Model,” Marion Jenkins, executive vice president at 3T Systems, discusses the CommonWell Health Alliance and the promise the alliance shows for removing some of the barriers that stand in the way of creating an advanced digital healthcare ecosystem.

The CommonWell Health Alliance is a non-profit alliance of six major healthcare software vendors — Greenway, Athenahealth, Allscripts, RelayHealth, Cerner and McKesson. It is designed to provide standardization and interoperability.

According to Mr. Jenkins, the CommonWell alliance recognizes the fact that patients don’t care about their physician’s electronic health record system; they just want the same freedom and flexibility they are used to seeing in their other personal/consumer arenas. Healthcare can take a lesson from companies like Amazon, whose value proposition was and is convenience. Amazon gives its consumers a seamless and intuitive experience.

The CommonWell alliance is an important step in developing and delivering an optimized digital healthcare experience to patients because the major systems are finally talking to each other rather than creating products in isolation, according to Mr. Jenkins.
